Allergies and Air Quality

Hepa Filters

Hepa stands for High-efficiency particulate air and is a type of mechanical air filter which works by forcing air though a fine mesh that traps harmful particles such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites and tobacco smoke. This can improve allergy symptoms when implemented into your home and/or work environments. A Hepa Filter used along with looking at other means of reducing other items in your home such as carpeting that hold onto irritating particles, can truly make your home your castle, breathing in comfort.

UV lights – Air Purification

Ultraviolet lights are a type of disinfection method whereby this light of a short wavelength is used to kill microorganisms and is used in a variety of applications including food, air and water purification. While primarily used in medical facilities in the past, the UV light application has more recently made its way to the forefront of home air quality products.

Air Ventilators

These are most common in household kitchens where they exist as exhaust fans for cooking or bathroom ceiling fans. This “mechanical” or “forced” ventilation is used to control indoor air quality as it involves the exchange of incoming and outgoing air. These units vary in vent size, noise levels and effectiveness in controlling cooking odours such as smoke and grease depending on who is doing the cooking and humidity levels depending on the person taking the shower. As all spaces have different requirements, there are various products to suit those needs.

Humidifiers

Humidifiers come in a variety of styles. A “point of use” humidifier can be used in a part of house, or a single room. Furnace humidifiers are a separate unit that is attached to your furnace and provides humidity to the whole home while larger units can accommodate commercial and industrial situations. A humidifier can be installed to help regulate humidity levels in your home during the dry Saskatchewan winter months.

CO2 Detectors

Carbon Monoxide Detectors are very useful in detecting the colorless, odourless, tasteless gas that is referred to as “the silent killer”. This gas is produced when there is an incomplete combustion of carbon containing material such as in the home where there may be a space heater, open flame, water heater malfunctions or blocked chimney. Detectors are designed to measure CO2 levels over time and sound an alarm when dangerous levels are detected. Most devices can be plugged into any wall socket, have batteries or both, and some come with dual fire alarm/CO2 detector. If you already have this in your home, it’s a good idea to check the battery if applicable and make sure that its placed near the ceiling or near the floor – countertop height is not as effective.

Reverse Osmosis

This water purification technology uses a combination of a special type of semi-permeable membrane and applied pressure to remove many types of impurities in both industrial processes and the production of potable water for human consumption. While filtration has its benefits, the difference between this type of process and simple filtration is that this type of purification is essentially “straining or size exclusion” of molecules – allowing for a more pure result allowing only for water to pass through due to the size of its molecules.
